Last weekend, I watched a lot of Kumite in Tennessee. Back in the early 90’s my brother and I played a lot of Super Street Fighter 2 on the SNES. So, I have a basic understanding of what’s going on in these games. Good memories. I watched mostly¬†Ultra Street Fighter IV and Tekken 7 and also a little bit of Mortal Kombat X.

My initial feeling was that watching this was a nice, enjoyable distraction for the weekend, but it was over and I would go back to my normal schedule. But a bug had bitten me. I missed playing fighting games, Street Fighter in particular.

Now, I have been living a relatively minimalist lifestyle, which is partly responsible for my family not owning a TV. So, my first thought was that this was going to just be a desire that would die out due to the money it would take to get back into it. I thought, “Am I seriously going to spend about $800 just so I can play Street Fighter V?” But the next few days went by, and I couldn’t shake the desire to get back into it. Then I thought about my tax refund coming soon.

Now, I get a sizable amount back being the sole income(<$40k/yr) provider in the family of four, but we have other things that need to be spent on too. Home repairs, medical bills, general debt. I tried to tell myself that it just wasn’t a good idea to spend that much for a single game. Yet, I couldn’t shake it. Street Fighter stayed in the back of my mind.

I found myself watching more and more¬†Ultra Street Fighter IV on Twitch.tv/PandaxGaming. Then, I stumbled across the Fighting Game Primer. While I haven’t had a TV in years, I have been gaming for the last three on my 3DS. The controls are not set up well for Street Fighter, but I had it and I decided to start with what I had. I know that some things are changing in SFV, but I need to work with what I have. The alternative is just sitting and waiting.

I talked with my wife and began to devise(and test) the possibility of buying a TV, PS4 and a fighting stick. The fighting stick was negotiated to a fighting pad and I agreed to give up some other things in order to help manage the cost. But at this point, it looks like I will getting back into Street Fighter, and bringing my son along.

Do I intend to become a pro? No. I don’t even know if I’ll even attend a sizable fighting game tournament. I hope to. I hope to be a confident and competent fighter. I would like to be able to hold my own with some of the people I see play on various streams. It is less about what I can accomplish in others eyes and more about taking up a challenge and completing it.

This will be where I pour my passion over the next year or so. In March, I will turn 40. My minimalist lifestyle allows me to take time to pursue my passions. And this is my choice at this time.

Now you’ll have to excuse me, I need to get back to my training.
